Metro Data Analysis
The Austin metropolitan area has grown tremendously over the past few decades. Capital Metro’s long range
transit plan, All Systems Go, lays out an ambitious plan to expand transit service along with the
growing population and employment over the next 20 years.
Capital Metro contracted with Perteet, Inc., in 2009 to conduct a comprehensive operations analysis of the
existing fixed route bus system and develop ServicePlan2020, a 10-year plan to improve bus service and
implement elements of All Systems Go

Use the filters in the top left to track where riders are getting on and off busses in the largest numbers.
This data is pulled from raw ridership data for August 25th 2016. The filter for max load will allow the user to filter to see where vehicles have the largest passenger load throughout the city.
This view of ridership data will allow the Austin city Metro authority to assess route planning efficiency using up to the minute ridership data.
Locations where Busses are Chronically Late
This chart areas of Austin where busses are chronically late in Austin.
Analysis of the difference between the scheduled arrival time and the vehicle's actual arrival time show clusters throughout the city where busses consistently miss their scheduled arrival times.
The map has been pre-filtered to show only stops that were more than 2 minutes late. Late buses are a chronic and costly problem for the city and its residents. Reducing lateness is key to improving quality of life.

Ridership by Hour of the Day
The chart to the right show the number of total riders for each hour of the day for the month of August 2017.
Riders cluster in the commuting hours of 07:00 - 09:00 in the morning and 16:00 -18:00 in the afternoon. Operational accuracy and efficiency will be most important in these hours.

Capital Metro Vehicle Speeds
The chart to the right shows where Capital Metro buses move the fastest in the city of Austin. The darker red areas show higher speeds while the light yellow indicates lower speeds.
Busses here are clearly faster near the Austin city limits and suburbs, while they are slower in the high density areas near downtown.

This chart show the relative distribution of Incidents for the past 30 days by hour of the day.
The cast majority of incident happen between the hours of 6:00 and 17:00 and Lost Items and Mechanical issues together make up the vast majority of incidents.
